Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease historically endemic to West and Central Africa, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). This virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus (OPV) genus within the Poxviridae family, which also includes the variola virus (VARV, or smallpox), vaccinia virus (VACV), camelpox virus (CMPV), and cowpox virus (CPXV), all of which are pathogenic to humans. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the preferred method for detecting MPXV DNA. When feasible, optimal diagnostic specimens are collected from the rash, including skin, fluid, crusts, or biopsy samples. Antigen and antibody detection methods may be less useful as they must differentiate between orthopoxviruses. There is limited comprehensive data on the pathophysiology and treatment of monkeypox.
