Moderate to Severe Binge Eating Disorder Overview

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is defined as an eating disorder marked by repetitive instances of binge eating, during which the person consumes more food than would typically be consumed within a distinct timeframe. Binge eating disorder (BED) is closely related to non-purging bulimia nervosa (BN), although there are distinctions between the two. The key characteristics of BED involve engaging in episodes of binge eating, occurring at least twice a week for six months, and accompanied by considerable distress. Unlike nonpurging bulimia nervosa, BED does not involve compensatory actions to avoid weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic use, or other medications. While many individuals with BED are overweight, not all fall into this category. Overweight individuals with BED are subject to the typical health risks of obesity, such as diabetes, hypertension, and orthopedic issues. The binge-eating disorder commonly emerges as an outcome or consequence of depression. Individuals often resort to "comfort foods" to cope with their depressive feelings. The development of binge-eating disorder, similar to anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, may initiate from low self-esteem or self-image. This disorder tends to arise when attempts to enhance self-assurance prove unsuccessful or go unrecognized externally. Faulty internal communication can also contribute to the development of binge-eating disorder. Factors that contribute to the emergence of this disorder include severe childhood obesity, a family history of overeating, experiences of body-related bullying or teasing, and substance abuse such as drugs or alcohol. Binge-eating disorder is most frequently identified in individuals who are overweight or obese. Current diagnostic criteria necessitate the occurrence of at least one binge episode per week for a duration of three months. Individuals grappling with binge-eating disorder are at an elevated risk of encountering depression and substance misuse. The treatment of binge-eating disorder in adults has succeeded through a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and antidepressant medication. BED is the most prevalent eating disorder in both the United States and Europe, with higher occurrences observed among teenagers and young adults. On average, the onset of BED occurs around the age of 25.

  • The prevalence of BED in children globally stands at 0.7%. In males, the one-year prevalence of BED is 0.26%, with the highest prevalence (0.48%) occurring in males aged 10-19. Among women, the age group of 20-29 exhibits the highest BED prevalence rates, estimated at 2.09%.
