Typically, B-ALL is more commonly diagnosed in children under five years of age and adults over 70, with males having a higher risk than females. Other factors that can elevate risk include previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatments and specific genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome. Certain factors indicate an unfavorable prognosis, including age over 65, central nervous system involvement at diagnosis, a high white blood cell count, a slow response to initial treatment, and minimal residual disease post-treatment. Minimal residual disease is a measurement of leukemia presence at the molecular level, as opposed to the cellular level, and can be quantified using flow cytometry.
